Sometimes I think it can be nostalgic to think about owning and running a business.  In some ways, it seems to be the ultimate American dream of independence and opportunity.  Small Business Saturday occurs this week, and I’m pulling back the curtain for a peek at what your dollars support.

When you support a small business, you do these things:

  1. Support options. I never set out on my journey intending to start, own, or run a business.  I simply had a need that could not be fulfilled with products that were available on the market.  I quickly realized I wasn’t the only one who needed an alternative.
When you support Hyssop Tree, you are supporting the ability to have choices in the marketplace.
  1. support small business and dorathy at hyssop treeEncourage someone. Running a small business can be very difficult.  There are no paid overtime hours, no sick days, and no paid vacation days.  When an emergency happens, it can turn a small business upside down.  But it can be very rewarding at the same time.  I love being able to pour my heart and soul into each soap and watch someone else enjoy it.  I value the friendships with my customers.  I love doing the right thing, and it’s a joy not having to explain to corporate why doing the right thing is the right thing to do.
When you support Hyssop Tree, you encourage me – and you validate the hard work, passion and effort that goes into every soap.
  1. Bring a community together. Being small means that I can develop relationships with local farmers and suppliers to provide my raw materials.  It means that I can turn to other local small businesses for my printing and other administrative needs.  It means that the dollars I have to spend to run my business are invested in other small businesses.
When you support Hyssop Tree, you support many other small businesses, including local farms.
  1. Support a family. I am not a fancy CEO with three vacation homes.  I’m not a corporate giant who takes international vacations.  I am a wife and a volunteer.  When I’m not working, you can usually find me volunteering in the community, hosting or feeding someone who’s hungry, or caring for someone in need.
When you support Hyssop Tree, you support someone who’s just like you – a real person who’s working her way through life and trying to make it better for those around her.
